Action Plan

Our social action plan focuses on three areas: Litter, Waste and School Grounds.

Throughout the school year we take part in activities covering these three areas.

Litter

As well as making everything look better, litter picking has environmental benefits too. Litter that is recycled or correctly disposed of prevents wildlife from getting hurt. It also prevents their habitats from being disturbed and prevents plastics from breaking down and entering the food chain as microplastics.

Waste

We have introduced recycling bins into every classroom, office and communal area of the school.

In addition to the recycling bins, the schools have revolutionised how they treat food waste. This will now be collected and go on to be processed. The processed waste will then become fuel pellets with 80% energy efficient return.

School Grounds

With investment from the Friends of Folkestone Academy we have built a specialist Horticulture classroom to integrate a Horticulture curriculum at Folkestone Academy. These lessons will provide pupils with a greater understanding of the science behind plant growth as well as equip pupils with the skills they can use to grow their own plants, whether it be ornamental or edible.

Pupils learn about the role plants play in an ecosystem. They will also understand the role that growing plants for food can play in reducing the impact of climate change through growing local and seasonal produce. It also gives pupils an understanding of how the food they enjoy is grown. The subject is taught in mixed ability groups and during practical sessions pupils are given a responsibility to ensure teamwork is developed. During practical sessions pupils have access to a purpose built horticulture area including an outdoor classroom,  polytunnel and a number of raised beds.
